<About Founder and the Brand>
Alissa is a social entrepreneur. In 2018, she was selected as the youngest awardee of Forbes Japan 100 Women 2018 followed up by Business Insider Japan’s “Game Changer 2019”.
Born in New York in 1992 as an only child, Alissa spent her early years with her family between New York and Japan. Almost ten years later, like many others, her life changed significantly on 9/11. Just three days later, her family was waiting at the airport to move back to Japan.
She remembers vividly waiting at the airport, sitting on the cold floor, waiting to get on a plane with feelings of fear, dread, anxiety, and uneasiness to say the least.
A small bit of solace came when a Red Cross worker appeared in front of her and gave her a small piece of candy. With that little bit of kindness, she reminisces how the world melted around her for the moment and provided her a feeling of safety and comfort. Those feelings are what she established Misaky.Tokyo on. Alissa aims to bring those feelings of safety and comfort she experienced years ago to all those who try her sweets.
Years later in Japan, Alissa went to a party with her friend and despite having a level of success that garnered recognition from both Forbes and Business Insider, she still felt empty inside. Talking with her friend, she was saddened by their discussion about how her friend often can’t find many good treats to eat. Her friend adheres to a vegan diet and has Celiac’s disease, keeping her from consuming products containing Gluten.
For Alissa, this conversation sparked a thought…Most Japanese desserts are Vegan, Gluten-Free and beautiful; the desserts might be able to replicate that feeling of safety like she experienced years earlier. She felt that not only could she create a beautiful dessert but also those feelings of safety and comfort alongside a better, safer world.
So, Alissa moved to Los Angeles in September 2019 and launched Misaky.Tokyo under the premise of “Shareable sweets that make people happy.” Misaky means “Beautiful Future” in Japanese and she wants to create wonderful and joyful times with all the significant people in her life.
